With the 2012 NCAA Baseball Championship bracket revealed yesterday, Virginia Tech was not among the 64 teams selected by the committee to participate, despite its 34-21 record and an RPI in the mid-30s.
However, in comments made by the chair of this year’s selection committee Kyle Kallander, the Big South Conference Commissioner, it appeared the Hokies were just outside the cutoff point.
In speaking with the media post-selection, Kallander said that the committee’s last five out were (in no particular order): Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Gonzaga, Texas and Utah Valley.
He said the committee started with a field of 107 teams for the 34 at-large selections and whittled that down with the last five teams getting in (again in no particular order): College of Charleston, Indiana State, Michigan State, Ole Miss and Sam Houston State.
