Hokies host in-state rival No. 20 Virginia in Commonwealth Clash

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team faces off against No. 20 Virginia on Saturday, April 7th. The contest is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

THE HOKIES (12-6, 3-6 ACC)
The last time out, Tech lost to 46th ranked NC State 4-3 in a tight contest. Natalie Novotna, Nika Kozar, and Nina Sorkin all won their singles matches for the Hokies. State edged the Hokies in doubles matches with Kozar and Sorkin picking up a win on court three.

Novotna moved up five spots to 61st ranked in the ITA standings with a record of 14-4 through the spring. Sorkin is now 13-4 in duals and has an ACC record of 6-3. Kozar is adding a 12-5 tally while Caroline Daxhelet is 11-7.

THE CAVALIERS (12-5, 6-3 ACC)
No. 20 Virginia enters the weekend match coming off of a 5-2 loss to Florida State at home. The Cavaliers were riding a five-game win streak before falling to FSU. The Seminoles won the singles matches 4-2 over UVA although Meghan Kelley and Chloe Gullickson picked up victories for the ‘Hoos.

Virginia sophomore Rosie Johanson comes into the weekend contest ranked 47th in the ITA standings with an 8-5 record on court one. Gullickson is 11-5, including 8-3 at four while Kelley is 14-3 with a 12-2 tally at three.

THE COMMONWEALTH CLASH
The Virginia Tech-Virginia women's tennis match is presented by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of Virginia Tech Athletics and the University of Virginia Athletics. The score for the "Commonwealth Clash" is now 7.5-4.5 (prior to the Virginia Tech-Virginia baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon) in favor of Virginia Tech. UP NEXT: The Hokies will travel through the Sunshine State beginning with a trip to Tallahassee, Florida to take on No. 19 Florida State. The match is set for Friday, April 13 at 2 p.m. Tech will square off against Miami on Sunday, April 15 at 11 a.m.
