No. 46 NC State holds off Hokies, 4-3

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team battled No. 46 NC State on Saturday afternoon to a 3-3 tie, but the Wolfpack held on to win it 4-3 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech (12-6, 3-6 ACC) fell behind after doubles as NC State (10-11, 3-5 ACC) claimed wins on courts one and two. Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin won the match on three, 6-3.

Kozar got the Hokies on the board as she took the match at four over No. 107 Claudia Wiktorin 6-2, 6-3. NC State scored again with a win at three, but Sorkin tied it at 2-2 as she rallied to defeat Amanda Rebol. After giving up the first set 3-6, Sorkin came back to roll in the next two, winning 6-0, 6-0.

The Hokies’ No. 66 Natalie Novotna gave Tech the lead with a 3-set win on court one over No. 65 Anna Rogers. Novotna won the opening set 6-4, but Rogers held on in the second to claim it 7-5. In the final set, Novotna secured the win 6-4.

NC State again tied it up, winning on court five leaving the deciding match on court two. Tech’s Caroline Daxhelet fell in the opening set 6-2 to the Wolfpack’s Adriana Reami. In the second set, Daxhelet trailed 2-4 but came back to tie it up at 5-5 and win the next two games to force the third. The two went back-and-forth in the final set and were tied at 4-4 before Reami claimed the final two to win it.

The Hokies will be back on the court next weekend, hosting in-state rival Virginia as part of the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virgina529. Currently the Hokies lead the ‘Hoos 7.5-4.5 in the 2017-18 clash.
