Hokies roll past Pitt, 6-1

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated ACC foe Pittsburgh, 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Tech (11-4, 2-4 ACC) opened the match with winning the doubles point. Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin paired up for the 6-1 win on court three while Elena Cerezo-Codina and Caroline Daxhelet secure the point 6-2 on one.

The Hokies pushed the lead to 2-0 with a win from 66th-ranked Natalie Novotna as she defeated Gabriela Rezende 6-4, 6-1 on court one. Kozar gave the Hokies a 3-0 lead, knocking off Callie Frey 6-2, 6-2 on four.

Daxhelet secured the team win for Tech with a win at two, downing Camila Moreno 6-4, 6-1.

The Hokies claimed their fifth point of the match as Sorkin claimed the match at six, defeating Clara Lucas with straight set scores of 6-4, 6-3.


On court five, Katherine Butler defeated Natsumi Okamoto 6-4 in the opening set. In the second set, Butler trailed 1-5 before rallying to win six straight games to win it in a big comeback, 7-5.

Virginia Tech will return to the court on Sunday, March 25 at top-ranked North Carolina. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Cone-KenField Tennis Center.
