Tech opens ACC slate with win to remain undefeated

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team got the ACC slate off to a strong start as the Hokies swept 27th-ranked Clemson 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech remains undefeated on the season, moving to 8-0 this spring.
Tech got out to the lead after winning the doubles point as Caroline Daxhelet and Natalie Novotna paired up at one to defeat Ally Miller and Tate Schroeder 6-2. The Hokies clinched the point at two where Sarah Baron and Elena Cerezo-Codina knocked off the duo of Fernanda Navarro and Constanza Gorches 6-3.
Nika Kozar pushed the Hokies lead to 2-0 as she defeated Dani Ruiz 6-2, 6-0 on court four. The Hokies 61st-ranked Novotna rolled to the 6-3, 6-2 win at the one over Navarro to put Tech on top 3-0.
The match was clinched on court three where Cerezo-Codina took care of business against Schroeder, securing the win 6-4, 6-2.
Katherine Butler split sets against Gorches on five, but ultimately walked away the winner as she defeated the Tigers’ player 7-5, 1-6, 10-5. There were also split sets on court two, but Daxhelet rallied to win it after giving up the first set 2-6. She came back to outlast in the second set 7-6 (5) and won the super tiebreak 10-5.
The Hokies are off to their best spring start since beginning 2004 with an 8-0 clip.
Tech will be back on the court next weekend, hosting Syracuse on Friday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m. The Hokies will take to the road for a Sunday match at Wake Forest on March 4 at noon.
