Hokies defeat Badgers 6-1, remain undefeated

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team continued their undefeated season as they picked up a win over Wisconsin 6-1 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech (7-0) clinched the doubles point before advancing to the singles. Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin brought in the first win of the day, defeating Wisconsin’s Kelsey Grambeau and Christina Zordani 6-1. The doubles point was secured by Caroline Daxhelet and Natalie Novotna, who defeated MaryAnn Rompf and Sara Castellano 6-1.

Novotna, ranked 61st, put the Hokies on the board first in the singles round as she defeated No. 111 Alexis Keberle 6-2, 6-4. She was quickly followed by Elena Cerezo-Codina, who defeated Rompf 6-4, 6-3.

Sorkin clinched the fourth point and the match for Tech, defeating Michelle Linden 6-4, 6-0.

Wisconsin answered with a point of its own coming from five, but the match had already been decided. On two, Daxhelet clinched a win after battling through a back and forth first set. She defeated Castellano 7-6, 6-4.

The match finished on court four in a three-set battle. Kozar claimed the first set 6-3, but dropped the second 6-7. She took a quick lead in the super tiebreak, ultimately defeating Granbeau 10-5.

The Hokies will be back on the court tomorrow, Feb. 24, as they open ACC play at 1 p.m. versus Clemson.
