Hokies win two on Saturday, defeating Liberty, Radford

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday to remain undefeated on the season as the Hokies defeated Liberty 5-2 before sweeping Radford 7-0 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech (6-0) opened the day against the Flames, giving up the doubles point early before rallying in singles. The Hokies got on the board with Caroline Daxhelet winning 6-2, 6-1 on court two. Tech’s 34th-ranked Natalie Novotna pushed the Hokies ahead 2-1 as she defeated Maria Medina 6-3, 6-1 at one.

Elena Cerezo-Codina secured the win at three, defeating Anna Dollar 6-2, 6-2 before Nina Sorkin clinched the match for the Hokies. The freshman downed Polina Miroshnichenko 6-2, 6-2 on court six. Tech wrapped up the match with a win on five from Katherine Butler who secured the 6-2, 6-3 decision against Evangeline Crist.

In the second match of the day, the Hokies locked down the doubles point against Radford to get the match started. Fallon Delp and Shene Disbergen teamed up for the 6-4 win over Jeanine Acierto and Zoe Fraser. The Highlanders won the match on two, but Sorkin and Nika Kozar paired up at one to win it 7-6 over Natalie Sayer and Tyler Blalock.

Novotna pushed the Hokies to a 2-0 lead in the match, knocking off Drouslie Dzeubou on court one while Disbergen rolled past Jeanine Acierto 6-1, 6-1 at five.

Daxhelet claimed her second win of the day as she won 6-3, 6-0 against Sayer, securing the team win for the Hokies.

Sarah Baron pushed the Hokies to a 5-0 lead in the match as she dropped Fraser 6-2, 6-4 on six. Butler Also picked up a second win on the day, this time at three where she defeated Meszaros 6-1, 6-4. Tech wrapped up the scoring with a win from Kozar at four as she had the 7-5, 6-2 decision against Blalock.

The Hokies will be back on the court, Friday, Feb. 23 hosting Wisconsin in in a 3 p.m. match. Tech will open ACC play the next day with a 1 p.m. home match versus Clemson.
