Tech claims second win of day, defeating App State 5-2

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team picked up its second win of the day, defeating Appalachian State 5-2 in the evening match at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Tech (2-0) got off to a slow start, giving up the doubles point to the Mountaineers. The Hokies won the match on two with a freshman duo of Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin defeating Sandra Anglesjö and Emily Gaskins, 6-3.

The Hokies got on the board with Sorkin’s win at five where she defeated Melissa Machado 6-2, 6-0. Tech went up 2-1 as Katherine Butler defeated Heidi Swope 6-2, 6-0 on four.

Kozar claimed her second singles win of the day, downing Taylor Bygrave 6-3, 6-3 in the three to give the Hokies a 3-1 advantage in the match. The Hokies clinched the match on court one where 25th-ranked Natalie Novotna knocked off Teodora Sevo 6-3, 6-4.

Shene Disbergen claimed the final point for the Hokies on court six. After winning the opening set 6-4 over Rebecca Morse, Disbergen fell 1-6 in the second before taking it in a tiebreak 10-5.

The Hokies will be back on the court next weekend, hosting Missouri on Sunday, Feb. 4 at noon.
