Hokies open spring, hosting ETSU and App State

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team is set to open the spring season, hosting ETSU at noon followed by Appalachian State at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

THE HOKIES (0-0, 0-0 ACC)
Virginia Tech had a solid fall season led by Natalie Novotna who enters the spring ranked 25th in the ITA standings. The sophomore won the ITA Atlantic Region title, earning a spot at the ITA Fall National Championships where she defeated then-ranked No. 4 Sara Daavettila of UNC. Elena Cerezo-Codina also had a strong fall, advancing to the semifinals of the regional event.

THE BUCS (0-0)
ETSU finished last season 14-6 while going 6-1 in the Southern Conference. The Bucs return five from last season, including four seniors. Ioanna Markesini earned a spot in last year’s NCAA Women’s Singles Championship. She earned First Team All-SoCon last season while Alory Pereira was second team and Yi Chi Ma was named to the All-Freshman team.

THE MOUNTAINEERS (2-1)
Appalachian State opened the season last weekend in Charlotte at the Duckworth Winter Classic. The Mountaineers’ lone loss was 4-0 to Clemson. During the weekend, App State defeated both Charleston Southern and UNCW with scores of 4-2. Teodora Sevo, Taylor Bygrave and Melissa Machado are 2-0 on the early season.

The Bucs and Mountaineers will face each other in a 3 p.m. neutral site match at BBTC.

Up Next: The Hokies are back at home next Sunday, Feb. 4, hosting Wisconsin at noon.
