Novotna with win over 4th-ranked at ITA Nationals
Tech sophomore downs nation's No. 4, has two ranked wins

PALM DESERT, Calif. – Virginia Tech sophomore Natalie Novotna had a big Friday, picking up a pair of ranked wins in the consolation singles of ITA Nationals in Palm Desert, California.
Novotna, ranked 56th, started the day knocking off the nation’s No. 4 as she rolled past UNC’s Sara Daavettila with straight set scores of 6-0, 6-4.
In the next round, Novotna faced Michigan’s Chiara Lommer who is ranked 115th in the ITA standings. Novotna and the Wolverine player kept it close in the opening set and were tied at 5-5 before Novotna broke Lommer and won on-serve 7-5. She claimed the second set 6-4.
Novotna will return to the court on Saturday, facing Florida’s 15th-ranked Anna Danilina in the next round.
