Daxhelet advances to quarterfinals at Lakewood Ranch

Kozar, Baron, Ghanem and Disbergen advance in Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team wrapped up the first day of competition at two events on Friday with student-athletes splitting time at the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court and Hokie Invite.

At the Lakewood Ranch event, Caroline Daxhelet picked up a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles draw. In the opening round, Daxhelet downed USF’s Ana Roman Dominguez 6-1, 7-6(2). She followed up with a battle against UCF’s Ksenia Kuznetsova. Daxhelet won the opening set 6-1, but fell in a tiebreak in the second. She powered back to win the third in another tiebreak.

Tech also had several players advance in their respective draws at the Hokie Invite. Nika Kozar claimed a first round win in the Honor Singles, defeating Liberty’s Rebekah Anderson, 6-2, 6-1.

Sarah Baron defeated Miami (OH) Melati Devi in the Sacrifice Singles, 6-4, 7-6(6) while Nancy Ghanem advanced in the Service Singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Wofford’s Curran Carver.

Shene Disbergen rolled to a first round win in the Ut Prosim draw, shutting out Penn State’s Hannah Kratky, 6-0, 6-0.

All of the Hokies will be back on the court Saturday with the Hokie Invite set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Lakewood singles will get underway at 10 a.m.
