Hokies advance on day one of Wofford Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Virginia Tech women’s tennis’ Nina Sorkin and Nancy Ghanem claimed singles wins on Friday, during the first day of the Wofford Invitational.

Sorkin opened the Gold Draw with a straight set win, rolling past USC Upstate’s Carol Sigaki 6-2, 6-0. In the next round, Sorkin dropped the first set 4-6 to Emory’s Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico before coming back to win the next two, 6-3, 10-5.

In the Wofford Draw, Ghanem won the first set 6-4 over Gardner-Webb’s Sandra Bolstad but the GWU player came back to win the second, 6-0. Ghanem secured the win in the super tiebreak, 10-6. Ghanem rolled in the second round, downing host-team Wofford’s Cassidy Hicks, 6-1, 6-4.

Fallon Delp paired up with Georgia Southern’s Arianne de Winter in the Grey Doubles where the duo defeated Emory’s Daniela Lopez and Defne Olcay, 6-3.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday.
