Cerezo-Codina, Novotna into quarterfinals at ITA Regionals

BLACKSBURG – Elena Cerezo-Codina and No. 56 Natalie Novotna advanced into the singles quarterfinals for the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team on Sunday afternoon at the 2017 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships.
Cerezo-Codina opened the day with a straight set win over Radford’s Lottie Meszaros with scores of 6-3, 6-1. She followed up with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 decision against Brooke Pilkington of Delaware. Cerezo-Codina will face William & Mary’s Olivia Thaler.
Tech’s 58th-ranked Novotna downed Liberty’s Evangeline Crist 6-2, 6-1 to open the day. The Tech sophomore followed up with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win over Richmond’s Emily Dunbar. In the quarterfinals, Novotna will square off against Old Dominion’s Natalie Vlasova.
Caroline Daxhelet battled for the Hokies on Sunday, picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Liberty’s Ashley Bongart in the first match. In the round of 16, Daxhelet faced UVA’s 74th-ranked Cassie Mercer. Giving up the first set 4-6, Daxhelet rolled in the second to win it 6-0. In the final set the two battled and were tied at 6-6 to force the tiebreak, but Mercer secured it 7-6(4).
The Hokies will be back on the court no earlier than noon on Monday, Oct. 16 in the quarterfinal round of singles.
