Hokies advance in main draw singles

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team had a strong day on Saturday, winning all five singles matches to advance in the 2017 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships.

Nina Sorkin continued her run in the tournament after coming out of the qualifying rounds. The Tech freshman advanced on Saturday after picking up the 6-4, 6-4 decision over Old Dominion’s Natalie Vlasova.

Fellow freshman Nika Kozar advanced in the main draw singles after defeating Mariam Mitaishvili of Hampton, giving up just one point, 6-1, 6-0.

Tech’s Caroline Daxhelet took care of business in similar fashion as she rolled past Old Dominion’s Adriana Rajkovic 6-1, 6-2.

Elena Cerezo-Codina also advanced, picking up the 6-2, 6-3 decision over Nathalie Finch of Howard.

The Hokies’ 56th-ranked Natalie Novotna advanced to the second round with a 7-5, 6-2 win over George Washington’s Maria Siopacha

Tech’s Daxhelet and Novotna paired up in doubles, picking up a win over Pitt’s Claudia Bartolome and Luisa Varon, 8-5. The Hokie duo was edged in the next round, falling to Liberty’s Evangeline Crist and Anna Dollar, 8-6.

The Hokies will return to the court on Sunday with matches beginning at 9 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
