Sorkin advances to main draw at ITA Atlantic Regionals

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team saw freshman Nina Sorkin advance out of the qualifying draw into the main draw on Friday during the opening day of the 2017 ITA Atlantic Region Championships in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Sorkin knocked off Laurel Shymansky from Duquesne in the opening round 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, Sorkin downed West Virginia’s Paula Goetz 6-4, 6-1.
Luisa Uscocovich picked up a hard-fought win in the opening round over Gabriela Rezende of Pitt. After falling 3-6 in the first set, Uscocovich rallied to win the next two 6-4, 6-4. The Tech player fell to VCU’s Gabriela Araujo 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.
Katherine Butler also took a first round match, defeating Radford’s Drousille Dzeubou 6-3, 6-1. In the second round, Butler faltered against ODU’s Adriana Rajkovic 6-3, 6-2.
The Hokies also picked up a win in doubles as Sarah Baron and Disbergen paired up to defeat Maryland’s Zoe Kulkarni and Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka 8-7(4).
Action will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
