Hokies claim wins on day one of Wake Forest Invite
Tech advances in singles draws on Friday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team had a solid opening day on Friday at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Nika Kozar had a tough first set against Charlotte’s Tai Martin, needing a tiebreaker to win it 7-6(7), but the Tech freshman rolled in the second set 6-0 to advance in the A2 singles flight.
In the E1 singles, Shene Disbergen fell behind, dropping the first set 3-6 to Elon’s Montana Moore. The Hokies’ sophomore battled back though to take the second 6-4 before winning the third 7-5.
McKenzie Collins also had a tough first set in the G1 singles, needing the tiebreak to win it 7-6(4) over Charlotte’s Gabriela Gonzalez. Collins powered back in the second to secure the match 6-1.
In doubles, Collins and Disbergen teamed up to win an opening round match 8-3 over ECU’s Sarah Sarjoo and Annija Veinsteina. The Tech tandem faltered in the second round, falling to JMU’s Jona Roka and Dylan Owens, 8-6.
The Hokies will return to the court on Saturday in Winston-Salem.
