Butler leads Tech on day one of Big 5 Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas – Katherine Butler led the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team with a pair of opening day wins on Friday at the Big 5 Challenge hosted by TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.

Butler battled to a pair of wins for the Hokies as both of her first day matches went to three. In the first match of the day, Butler rallied for a win over TCU’s Alexis Pereira after giving up the first set 6-0. Butler came back to win the second 6-3 and take the third in a super tiebreak 10-3.

In the second match of the day, Butler again rallied this time to down Maya Das of rival Virginia. Butler faltered in the opening set 6-4, but took the next two 6-3, 10-6.

Freshman, Nika Kozar, makes her college debut a success with a win over TCU’s Meredith Roberts in straight set scores of 6-2, 6-0. In the second match of the day, Kozar fell to 67th-ranked Kelley Anderson of Arizona State, 6-3, 6-4.

Caroline Daxhelet fell in her opening match of the day, but bounced back for the afternoon tilt to defeat Arizona State’s Savannah Slaysman in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 10-6.

The Hokies will be back on the court Saturday for the second day of the Big 5 Challenge.
