Hokies set for Big 5 Challenge

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team is set to compete Sept. 22-24 at the Big 5 Challenge hosted by TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

Traveling for the Hokies are returners Elena Cerezo-Codina, Caroline Daxhelet, Katherine Butler, Sarah Baron and Luisa Uscocovich. Freshmen Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin will make their Hokie debuts this weekend.

The three-day event will feature athletes from Texas Tech, Michigan, South Carolina, Virginia, TCU, Arizona State and Georgia. All of which finished last season ranked in the final ITA team standings of 2016-17. Combined the teams boast 19 players ranked in the preseason ITA singles standings as well as eight doubles tandems.

For the Hokies, Cerezo-Codina and Daxhelet enter the field ranked 53rd in the ITA doubles preseason rankings. Kozar and Sorkin take the court for the first time in their Hokie careers as both enter the season as highly touted freshmen. Kozar brings a No. 150 ranking in the ITF juniors standings to Virginia Tech while Sorkin comes to Tech as the No. 1 women’s tennis recruit in the state of Virginia with a ranking of 42 nationally.

Competition will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. ET with the Hokies taking the court at 12:30 p.m. ET. Singles and doubles matches will be played all three days, culminating in championships on Sunday beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
