Tech wraps up day two of Bedford Cup
Doubles team knocks off top-seed

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team wrapped up the second day of competition on Saturday at the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic in College Park, Maryland.
The Hokies’ Nancy Ghanem and Sarah Baron advanced into the quarterfinals of doubles, rolling past the top-seeded team Maryland’s Kate Yemelyanenka and Zoe Kulkarni 6-1. The Tech duo fell in a hard-fought quarterfinal match as VCU’s Marina Alcaide and Sofia Sualehe secured the 7-5 decision.
In the main draw of singles, Baron and Shene Disbergen represented the Hokies in the round of 16. Baron faltered against 4th-seed Maria Siopacha of Georgetown, 6-0, 6-2. Disbergen also fell in the round to 7th-seed Sara Komer of Delaware 7-5, 6-4.
Freshman Dori Mesmer picked up a win in the consolation bracket of singles, defeating Coppin State’s Brittanie Cahua 6-3, 6-4. Mesmer fell in the next round 6-2, 6-1 to Georgetown’s Drew Spinosa.
Tech’s McKenzie Collins and Fallon Delp paired up to defeat CSU’s Precious Udofe and Tinashe Gwaze 6-1 in the doubles consolation.
The Hokies will conclude the Bedford Cup on Sunday with singles matches beginning at 9 a.m.
