Hokies earn academic honors

Tech recognized by ACC and ITA

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team has earned 2017 academic honors from both the Atlantic Coast Conference as well as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Representing the Hokies on the ACC team were junior Elena Cerezo-Codina, senior Francesca Fusinato and freshman Natalie Novotna. Cerezo-Codina, a human development major, tallied a 7-6 record in ACC play on the season and was 8-5 overall at the three. Fusinato, who majored in human nutrition, food and exercise, put together an impressive 16-8 tally at the one on the year while going 8-5 in the league. Novotna, majoring in biochemistry, earned ITA Regional Player to Watch honors after going 18-5 in the spring. Uscocovich rounds out the team, majoring in architecture, the freshman recorded doubles victories in matches against No. 23 Wake Forest and No. 42 Florida State.

Tech placed seven student-athletes on the ITA team. Joining Fusinato and Novotna were Katherine Butler, Caroline Daxhelet, Fallon Delp, Sansitha Nandakumar and Luisa Uscocovich.

Butler, a junior majoring in language and literature with a minor in business, appeared in 13 matches for the Hokies in the spring. Daxhelet went 8-9 in dual play while studying human nutrition, food and exercise. Freshman Delp did not see action in the spring, but picked up two singles wins during fall tournament play. Nandakumar, an economics major, finished her career with a 29-26 tally in dual play, including a 15-9 mark at the six.
