BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will take on No. 12-seed Boston College in the first round of the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women’s Tennis Championships on Wednesday, April 26 held at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Georgia.
The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET, with the Hokies (11-12, 4-10 ACC) entering the conference tournament as the No. 13 seed. The winner of tomorrow’s matchup will face No. 5-seed N.C. State on Thursday, April 27. The second round match against the Wolfpack is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET.
“We had a close match with Boston College earlier this season, so we are excited to have another opportunity to compete against them,” said coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. “It’s been a very competitive season for our conference this spring, and we’re looking forward to arriving in Rome and starting the championships. We will take it one match at a time.”
In the lone meeting between the Eagles (9-13, 4-10 ACC) and the Hokies this season, Boston College edged Virginia Tech by a score of 5-2 on April 7 at the Flynn Recreation Plex in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. However, Boston College has not won a match since defeating the Hokies, dropping one contest at home and three on the road to conclude its regular season. Senior Lexi Borr of Boston College ranks No. 110 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Poll, holding a 10-11 record at the No. 2 singles slot this season.
Tech conclude its 2017 regular-season slate against then-No. 39 Miami and then-No. 42 Florida State at home on April 21 and April 23, respectively. The Hokies dropped a 5-2 decision to the Hurricane on April 21, followed by a 4-3 setback to the Seminoles on April 23.
Freshman Natalie Novotna and senior Francesca Fusinato check in at No. 101 and No. 111, respectively, in this week’s ITA singles poll. Novotna paces the Hokie roster with 17 victories, followed by Fusinato with 15. Additionally, Fusinato and junior Caroline Daxhelet are ranked as the No. 69 doubles tandem in the country, playing primarily at the No. 1 slot. The Hokie duo has upset two top-35 opponents since pairing up together midway through the season.
Of note, Tech holds a 1-0 all-time series advantage over Boston College in the ACC Tournament. The Hokies bested the Eagles, 4-3, at the 2015 league championships, advancing to the ACC quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Tech then went on to claim an at-large NCAA Tournament bid for the first time in 15 years.
