Despite winning back-to-back matches to clinch the doubles point, the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to Boston College Friday afternoon, 5-2, at the Flynn Recreation Plex, in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

The Hokies (8-10, 1-8 ACC) started off strong against the Eagles (9-9, 4-6 ACC), as they won back-to-back matches at the No. 2 and No. 1 doubles positions, respectively. The duo of junior Elena Cerezo-Codina and freshman Natalie Novotna picked up a 6-3 decision over Boston College’s Lexi Borr and Jackie Urbinati on court two. At the No. 1 slot, the No. 55-ranked doubles tandem of senior Francesca Fusinato and junior Caroline Daxhelet followed suit and bested Boston College’s Kylie Wilcox and Dasha Possokhova, 6-3, to captured the Hokies’ first match point of the day.

However, the Eagles then rallied in singles action and picked up wins in four of the next five matches to clinch the team victory.

Wilcox tied the match at one-all, defeating Daxhelet in straight sets at the No. 4 slot (6-3, 6-1). Cerezo-Codina regained the lead for the Hokies’, but not for long, as she ended up winning Tech’s only singles victory of the match (6-1, 7-6 (1)) on court three.

Holding a 2-1 advantage, No. 92 Fusinato fell in straights on court one to Boston College’s Asya Dair (6-3, 6-3). No. 104 Novotna then entered a three set battle on court two, but she couldn’t hang on, as she dropped a 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-3 decision to Borr.

Boston College’s Emily Safron ultimately clinched the match for the Eagles, when she defeated Katherine Butler in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 5 position.

Up next, Tech will close out its 2017 regular-season road schedule with a match against Pittsburgh (3-10, 0-9 ACC) on Sunday, April 9. The contest is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. held inside the University of Pittsburgh’s Alpa Tennis and Fitness Center. Live stats for the match can be found HERE.
