Tech Falls to No. 48 in the Oracle/ITA National Rankings

BLACKSBURG – Despite a 5-2 win over Old Dominion to close out its non-conference schedule, the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped four spots in this week’s Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Collegiate Tennis Women’s Division I National Rankings, checking in at No. 48.

Florida holds steady at No. 1, followed by Ohio State at No. 2. North Carolina and Michigan sit at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, while Georgia Tech rounds out the top five, moving up six spots this week.

Auburn ranks No. 6, California ranks No. 7 and Texas Tech ranks No. 8. Pepperdine and Duke round out the top 10.

Of note, Tech is one of 10 Atlantic Coast Conference teams ranked in this week’s top-50 poll, with three league schools ranked in the top 10.

Most recently, Tech marked its third straight win of the season, defeating Old Dominion, 5-2, over the weekend. Sansitha Nandakumar and Natalie Novotna claimed a 6-2 win in doubles, defeating ODU’s Borislava Botusharova and Marijana Novakovic at the No. 3 spot. Francesca Fusinato and Katherine Butler also defeated ODU’s Adriana Rajkovic and Natalua Malenko in a 7-5 tiebreak decision on court two, tallying their fifth win of the season. The Hokies then won four of six singles matches to seal the victory. Novotna and Caroline Daxhelet cruised to easy wins on their respective courts, while Fusinato recorded the game-winner with a three-set victory at the No. 1 spot.

The Hokies (7-2) will hit the road for a pair of ACC matches this week. The team will square off against No. 5 Georgia Tech on Friday, March 3 at 3 p.m., followed by a match against in-state rival No. 42 Virginia on Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m.
