BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend, as the squad heads to Morgantown, West Virginia, for a match against the Mountaineers on Saturday, Feb. 5. Competition is set to begin at noon held inside Ridgeview Racquet Club.

Most recently, Tech (5-2) played host to Marshall and Radford in a doubleheader event on Feb. 12. The team fell in a Sunday morning setback to Marshall, but claimed a 7-0 victory over Radford in the afternoon session, earning a split of non-conference matches. Against Marshall, Tech lost three three-set battles in falling 5-2 to the Herd, before rebounding with the shutout of the Highlanders. Freshman Natalie Novotna paced the Hokies, winning both of her matches, as she moved to 6-0 overall this spring.

Additionally, the Hokies boast two players ranked inside the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 100 Singles Poll, as junior Caroline Daxhelet and senior Francesca Fusinato sit at No. 52 and No. 66, respectively. Junior Elena Cerezo-Codina and Daxhelet also moved up eight spots and are ranked No. 51, recording a 3-2 mark at the No. 1 slot.

In its last weekend of competition, West Virginia (3-4) held on to capture a 4-3 victory over Buffalo on Feb. 11, at the Miller Tennis Center in Buffalo, New York. The Bulls clinched the doubles point and maintained a 1-0 advantage early on, but the Mountaineers won four-of-six singles matches to secure the victory. Of note, junior Habiba Shaker holds a team-best 5-2 record in singles play this year, competing primarily at the No. 1 position.
