Tech travels to Purdue

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend, as the squad travels to West Lafayette, Indiana, for a match against Purdue on Saturday, Feb. 5. Competition is set to begin at 12 p.m., at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

“We are looking forward to tomorrow’s match,” said coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. “Purdue is a strong team that has a great tennis history, and we always have had good matches with them. Our team has been working hard this past week, and it’s been great to see them continue to grow together as a group. We are excited to compete well tomorrow.”

Tech (3-1) got an early taste of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play when it took on Clemson at the ITA Kickoff Weekend held in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Hokies liked it, beating the Tigers 4-2 to rebound from a loss to No. 9 Vanderbilt last weekend.

The doubles teams of Francesca Fusinato and Katherine Butler and Natalie Novotna and Sansitha Nandakumar combined to win the doubles point, and Fusinato, Novotna and Elena Cerezo-Codina each recorded wins in singles action to lift Tech to the win. Fusinato and Cerezo-Codina also won over ranked opponents, as the Hokies moved to 3-1 on the season.

Of note, Fusinato leads the team with a 3-1 singles record at the No. 1 slot, followed by Novotna with two dual-match victories on court three and one win on court four. The doubles tandem of Caroline Daxhelet and Cerezo-Codina, ranked No. 59 nationally, also pace the Hokie roster this season with a 1-1 doubles record on court one.

Most recently, Purdue (5-1) dropped its first match of the season at Dartmouth on Jan. 29. The Boilermakers continued their six-match streak of securing the doubles point, but ultimately dropped the match by a score of 4-3.
