BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team opened the 2017 spring season with a 5-2 win over Troy. It is the first match in a Saturday doubleheader for the Hokies.
The Hokies fell behind in the morning match as Troy claimed the doubles point to get out to the 1-0 lead in the match. Tech did pick up the win on court one where Katherine Butler and Francesca Fusinato paired up to defeat the Trojans duo of Sanae Ohta and Efriliya Herlina, 7-5.
The Hokies got on the board with a win at four where Natalie Novotna knocked off Jiayuan Xue in straight sets. Tech took a 2-1 lead on court one as Fusinato defeated Ohta 6-3, 6-0. Troy tied it up 2-2 after Nancy Karaky picked up the point on court four when Caroline Daxhelet had to withdraw with injury.
Tech went up 3-2 with Butler’s 6-1, 6-4 win over Herlina on five and secured the team win with Elena Cerezo-Codina winning 6-2, 6-2 over Hannah Seizer at two. Sansitha Nandakumar rounded out the scoring for the Hokies, defeating Luisa Ferauti 6-2, 6-2 on six.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court this afternoon at 4:30 when the Hokies host East Tennessee State at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
