BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team boasts a roster of talented, skilled and interesting student-athletes. In an effort to learn more about their lives on and off the court, HokieSports.com will interview select Virginia Tech women’s tennis players each week.
This week, we sat down with freshman Luisa Uscocovich.
What differences are there from your hometown to Blacksburg?
Luisa Uscocovich: It is completely different. We have different cultures, and sometimes I miss home. We eat at different times. We kiss each other instead of shake hands. I miss having my family around, and I miss the weather.
Where are your favorite spots to go on campus?
LU: The dining halls are my favorite spots to go on campus.
What got you involved with tennis?
LU: My grandparents got me involved with tennis.
If you could play another sport, what would it be? Why?
LU: If I could play another sport it would be soccer. I loved playing it, but I was bored playing it with the girls when I was little (in Ecuador it is a sport for women). I tried playing with the boys, but I just didn’t feel comfortable.
Who do you look up to the most? Why?
LU: I want to give my best every single day.
As an incoming freshman, what brought you to Hokie country? How has your time as a Hokie been so far?
LU: The excellent architectural program brought me to Tech. It has been amazing. I thought it was going to be harder, and I thought I was going to miss home and cry every day, but that didn’t happen. I met some great people, and I have had a beautiful experience with my teammates so far.
What’s your favorite tennis memory?
LU: The first time I won a doubles final. Everybody thought we were going to lose, and when we won, nobody believed it.
What has tennis done for you?
LU: It has shown me so many things. Now, I understand that life is not easy. I learned to give my best every time. I am also more organized.
