Freshman discusses her appreciation toward Hokie Nation along with her favorite places on campus

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team boasts a roster of talented, skilled and interesting student-athletes. In an effort to learn more about their lives on and off the court, HokieSports.com will interview select Virginia Tech women’s tennis players each week.
This week, we sat down with freshman Shene Disbergen.
What differences are there from your hometown to Blacksburg?
Shene Disbergen: The atmosphere is very different in Blacksburg because of the proximity to the college. The community also is different in a very good way because of all the supporters that come to Tech for sporting events etc.
Where are your favorite spots to go on campus?
SD: I would say that Deet’s Place and the Drill Field are my favorite sports to go on campus.
What got you involved with tennis?
SD: My dad got me involved with tennis from a very young age. I was playing both tennis and basketball, and he steered me in the direction of tennis.
If you could play another sport, what would it be? Why?
SD: If I could play another sport it would be basketball because I also competed in basketball when I was younger. It is a great team sport.
Who do you look up to the most? Why?
SD: I look up to my mom the most because she knows what type of person I am and what I can really accomplish. She also is someone that I can confide in, and she is supportive toward my tennis goals.
As an incoming freshman, what brought you to Hokie country? How has your time as a Hokie been so far?
SD: I was introduced to Hokie country long before I actually arrived thanks to my coach in Florida. It is an excellent school with a great tennis program. My time as a Hokie has been unbelievable so far. It truly is a once in a lifetime experience, and I am very excited for the future!
What’s your favorite tennis memory?
SD: My favorite tennis memory is winning Florida States for the Girl’s 18’s.
What has tennis done for you?
SD: Tennis has taught me to work hard, and it has taught me what true dedication is. It also has taught me to manage my time properly.
