Catching up with Sloan Barton

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team boasts a roster of talented, skilled and interesting student-athletes. In an effort to learn more about their lives on and off the court, HokieSports.com will interview select Virginia Tech women’s tennis players each week.

This week, we sat down with junior Sloan Barton.

What differences are there from your hometown to Blacksburg?

Sloan Barton: My hometown is just about the same; it’s a small town. One thing that took me a while to get used to were all the hills. Delaware is a very flat state with little to no hills, and it sits right at sea level.

Where are your favorite spots to go on campus?

SB: My favorite spots to go to on campus are probably Turner and Lane Stadium just because I spend the most time there other than the tennis courts of course.

What got you involved with tennis?

SB: My mom signed my older brother and sister up for lessons at our country club. She thought that it would be something fun for all of us to do when we got older. Eventually, our whole family got into it, and we play together just about every chance we get.

If you could switch places with another Tech athlete, who would it be?

SB: I would have to say just anyone on the football team. I want to experience what it is like playing in front of so many screaming fans.

Who do you look up to the most? Why?

SB: I definitely would have to say my mom because she is one of the most caring people I know. She would always tell us that she doesn't want us to get her anything for her birthday. Instead, she wants us to use the money toward helping others any way that we think is best. She has taught me and my siblings to show compassion toward everyone no matter the circumstances, and I think people lose sight of that sometimes.

How has your time been as a Hokie so far?

SB: It has been amazing. I love the culture that comes with being a Hokie, and I am so glad I can be a part of it.

What has been your favorite memory as a Hokie so far?

SB: My favorite memory was when our team made it to the NCAA's my freshman year, and we traveled to Los Angeles. I had never been there before, so that was pretty cool. As a team, we advanced to the second round of the tournament for the first time in a long time, and that was an amazing experience to be a part of.

What has tennis done for you?

SB: Tennis has taught me sacrifice, determination and leadership. It also has brought me to some of my closest friends.
