Catching up with Caroline Daxhelet

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team boasts a roster of talented, skilled and interesting student-athletes. In an effort to learn more about their lives on and off the court, HokieSports.com will interview select Virginia Tech women’s tennis players each week.

This week, we sat down with junior Caroline Daxhelet.

What differences are there from your hometown to Blacksburg?

Caroline Daxhelet: I was born in Brussels, but I moved to a little town south of Belgium called Arlon when I was little. The main difference is that my hometown is quite old and has a lot of history related to World War II. The population is pretty old there. Most people living in Blacksburg are college students, so it is a lot busier compared to where I am from.

Where are your favorite spots to go on campus?

CD: I love going to Turner because I think they have the best food on campus. Otherwise, I really enjoy walking on the Drillfield.

What got you involved with tennis?

CD: I started playing tennis mostly because my older brother was playing. When I was a kid, I wanted to do the same things my brother was doing. Tennis also was quite a big sport in my family. My grandfather played until he was 82 years old.

If you could switch places with another Tech athlete, who would it be?

CD: Irena Sediva. She is a thrower on the track and field team. She is a great athlete, but also a very nice person. She won the Female Athlete of the Year award last year, which was definitely well-deserved.

Who do you look up to the most? Why?

CD: My boyfriend. He is a professional tennis player, so I can learn a lot from him. He always has great advices to help me with my tennis, but he also helps me outside of tennis. He is a great inspiration for me, and he is always there to help and motivate people.

How has your time been as a Hokie so far?

CD: Awesome. I made some of the best memories of my life here. I met a lot of amazing people. I have awesome teammates, coaches and professors. I could not have expected anything better than that.

What has been your favorite memory as a Hokie so far?

CD: The day we beat Boston College at the 2015 ACC Championships. We lost against the same team a few weeks earlier, so we knew it wouldn’t be easy. I was playing the deciding match point. It was one of the longest and most stressful match I ever played. I saved four match points to win 7-6 in the third set. Winning that match gave us a good chance to be selected to the NCAA’s for the first time in 15 years, so it was even more exciting. There is no word to describe the feeling when we won.

What has tennis done for you?

CD: It gave me so many great memories. It taught me to be hard-working and disciplined. Being a student-athlete requires you to be organized, which will definitely help me in the future. Tennis is a great sport to improve your skills both physically and mentally. I have been through tough times because of tennis, but at the end of the day, I could not imagine my life without it.
