Hokies ink Virginia's top recruit for 2017 signing class

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s tennis coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods announced on Thursday that Nina Sorkin (Glen Allen, Virginia) has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Hokies for the 2017-18 season.

“We are thrilled to add Nina to our team next fall,” Zawacki-Woods said. “We believe Nina fits all the traits we look for in a student-athlete. She is not only a strong tennis player, but she also excels in the classroom and in the community.

“We have been so impressed with her enthusiasm for the university and the tennis program, and we foresee her making an immediate impact on all areas of our program. We are excited for her future as a Hokie.”

A native of Glen Allen, Virginia, Sorkin comes to Blacksburg ranked as Virginia’s No. 1 tennis recruit by TennisRecruiting.net. She also is ranked the fifth-best high school senior in the Mid-Atlantic region and sits at No. 42 nationally for the 2017 senior class. A five-star recruit, Sorkin competes at Deep Run High under coach Maria Sorkin, who also is her mother.

Sorkin is a three-time All-Metro Player of the Year honoree and has not lost a high school singles match in three years. She went 23-0 her junior year and claimed state titles in the 5A singles, doubles and team events. Sorkin also won the state singles and doubles championships her freshman and sophomore year.

Nationally, Sorkin competed at the 2016 U-18 Clay Court Championships, winning five singles matches to reach the quarterfinals. She also advanced to the doubles semifinals at the 2015 U-16 Clay Court Championships.

“I chose Virginia Tech because of its outstanding tennis program and academics,” Sorkin said. “It has always been my No. 1 choice. My mother played tennis at Tech, my father played baseball at Tech and my brother is currently at Tech.

“I grew up going to Tech football games and other Hokie events, so I knew this was the best fit for me. I love the coaches, and I know they can help me improve my game. I also love the players, who have already welcomed me and made me feel a part of the team. I am so excited to be a Hokie.”

Virginia Tech resumes competition in January. The Hokies will open their 2017 spring schedule with a doubleheader at home against Troy and Longwood on Saturday, Jan. 21.
