Tech Hosts Annual Hokie Fall Invitational
The Hokies welcome seven regional teams to Blacksburg this weekend

BLACKSBURG – Following a week off from competition, the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will play host to seven regional teams at the Hokie Fall Invitational from Oct. 28-30, in Blacksburg.

The three-day event will take place at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, with competition set to begin at 9 a.m. each day. The tournament consists of four singles flights and two doubles draws, as 10-of-14 players on the Hokies’ roster will compete throughout the weekend.

Tech welcomes student-athletes from George Washington, James Madison, Marshall, Radford, Towson, UNC Wilmington and VCU to Blacksburg.

Most recently, the team competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional in Norfolk, Virginia, from Oct. 14-18. Senior Francesca Fusinato and Junior Elena Cerezo-Codina advanced to the quarterfinals, while freshman Natalie Novotna advanced to the semifinals in the main singles draw. Cerezo-Codina and Novotna also advanced to the semifinals in the main doubles draw.

Freshmen duo McKenzie Collins and Fallon Delp will kick off the day for the Hokies, as the doubles tandem takes on UNCW’s Laura Gomez and Celeste Matute in the Hokies Doubles Flight at 9 a.m. The other five doubles pairings have a first round bye and will compete in the second round of competition on Saturday.

Fusinato and Novotna will compete in the Maroon Singles Flight on Friday, at 12 p.m. Fusinato will face Radford’s Drousile Dzeubou, while Novotna squares off against James Madison’s Timea Guibe.

Senior Sansitha Nandakumar, junior Sarah Baron and freshman Nancy Ghanem also will participate in the Orange Singles Flight on Friday. Nandakumar will compete against JMU’s Rachel Nelson, while Baron faces Radford’s Meili Martin. Both matches are set to begin at 10 a.m. Of note, Ghanem will battle VCU’s Magda Aubest in that same bracket at 11 a.m.

Sophomore Emily Pence, Collins and Delp will compete in the Grey Singles Flight. Collins will square off against UNCW’s Laura Gomez at 10 a.m., while Delp competes against George Washington’s Sara Grubae at 11 a.m. Of note, Pence has a first round bye and will compete in the second round of competition on Friday afternoon.

Junior Sloan Barton and freshman Luisa Uscocovich will participate in the Black Singles Flight. Barton will battle GW’s Kamilla Beisenova at 11 a.m., while Uscocovich faces Towson’s Lucy Gloninger at 11:30 a.m.
