The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team advanced three Hokies to the quarterfinals along with one doubles pairing to the semifinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional on Sunday, at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center, in Norfolk, Virginia.
Senior Francesa Fusinato, junior Elena Cerezo-Codina and freshman Natalie Novotna advanced in the main singles draw, while Cerezo-Codina and Novotna advanced in the main doubles bracket.
No. 42 Fusinato, seeded at No. 1, played lights out over the course of two days and claimed back-to-back-to-back straight-set victories for the first time this season. On Saturday, Fusinato defeated Georgetown’s Sara Swift by a score of 6-2, 6-1. The Feltre Belluno, Italy, native then moved on and picked up two more straight-set victories over Liberty’s Evangeline Crist (6-4, 7-5) and Marshall’s Stephanie Smith (6-3, 7-5) to advance to the quarterfinals.
“It’s tough to play outside, and I didn’t play my best,” Fusinato said. “However, I found myself in the second match. I was very confident, and I wasn’t afraid to lose, even when I was down 4-3 in the second set.”
Fusinato will take that confidence into tomorrow’s matchup, as she faces William & Mary’s Marie Faure at 9:30 a.m.
No. 94 Cerezo-Codina, seeded at No. 3, defeated Virginia’s Camille Favero by a score of 6-4, 6-0 on Saturday. The Almeria, Spain, native then captured two more victories, including a three-set battle over Maryland’s Arnelle Sullivan. Cerezo-Codina dropped the first set, but bounced back in the final two sets to claim the match by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
“I thought my serves were good overall, but I need to keep improving on my opportunities to close games,” Cerezo-Codina said.
Cerezo-Codina will take on Marshall’s Derya Turhan tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
Novotna entered the main bracket as an unseeded player, but also defeated top opponents from VCU, Marshall and William & Mary over the course of two days. On Saturday, Novotna took down VCU’s Anna Rasmussen in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 7-5. The Vysoka nad Labem, Czech Republic, native then claimed two more victories, including a three-set win over William & Mary’s Ekaterina Stepanova by a score of 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
“Today’s matches were tough, but I figured out how to focus and fought for every point,” Novtona said.
Novotna will square off against Old Dominon’s Borislava Botusharova tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
In doubles action, the No. 8-seeded doubles tandem also tallied three victories, defeating in-state foe opponents from Radford, Virginia and James Madison. Cerezo-Codina and Novotna bested Radford’s Drousile Dzeubou and Natalie Sayer by a score of 8-6 on Saturday. The duo then captured victories over Virginia’s Teodora Radosavljevic and Camille Favero (8-3) and James Madison Kimmy Herrock and Timea Guibe (8-4), respectively, on Sunday to advance to the semifinals.
“We are working well together, and we understand one another,” Cerezo-Codina said. “Our serves have been a strength, and I want to maintain constant aggressiveness in our play.”
“We are getting better with every match, and we are predicting our plays,” Novotna added.
The semifinal match takes place tomorrow, as Cerezo-Codina and Novotna square off against Maryland’s Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan at 12 p.m. The final round of competition also will take place that same evening.
Of note, the singles semifinal and final round of competition will take place on Tuesday.
