The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team completed day one at the International Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional tournament on Friday evening, at the Flokes-Stevens Tennis Center, in Norfolk, Virginia.
Senior Sansitha Nandakumar and junior Sarah Baron dropped both their matches in the singles qualifying bracket. Nandakumar dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to James Madison’s Kimmy Herrock, while Baron fell to Pitt’s Gabrielle Rezende by a score of 6-1, 7-5.
In the singles qualifying consolation bracket, Baron defeated Old Dominion’s Adriana Rajkovic in a three-set battle. Baron captured the first set, but dropped the second in a tie breaker. Baron then defeated Rajkovic in another three set tie breaker by a score of 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 1-0 (13-11) to advance to the second round of the singles qualifying consolation draw.
In doubles action, Nancy Ghanem and Nandakumar defeated Richmond’s Gaby Rosales and Kiana Marshall by a score of 8-5 to advance to the second round of the main doubles draw.
Of note, the singles main draw begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., as senior Francesca Fusinato, juniors Elena Cerezo-Codina and Caroline Daxhelet and freshman Natalie Novotna set to compete on Saturday.
