CARY, N.C. – The 31^st-ranked/9t^h-seeded Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 28/No. 8 Wake Forest in the second round of the 2016 ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C. on Thursday. The Hokies sit at 14-10 on the year and finish 7-8 in the ACC while Wake Forest gains its 19^th win and has an 8-7 conference record heading into the quarterfinals.

Doubles competition kicked off the morning with Wake’s Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyaschenko striking first on court 1, taking down Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford 6-2 to give the Demon Deacons the early momentum. Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza followed suit in the 3 spot, beating Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandaumar 6-3 to clinch the doubles point and 1-0 lead for Wake. Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita’s match with Emma Davis and Samantha Asch went unfinished on court 2.

Wake claimed a 2-0 lead to begin singles play as Asch took down Mita 6-3, 6-1 out of the 5 spot before Joanna Zalweski moved the count to 3-0 shortly after with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Williford over on 4.

With the Hokies down 3, Nandakumar battled her way into a second-set tiebreaker on court 6 before falling 0-6, 7-6 (2) to Fernandez to give Wake its fourth and match-clinching point.

No. 56 Fusinato, No. 125 Cerezo-Codina and Daxhelet were all locked in the third sets of their matches on courts 1, 2 and 3 before play was discontinued.

Now the Hokies play the waiting game to find out if they advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second season in a row. The team selection show is set to stream at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3 followed by the singles competition selection show at 5:30.
