BLACKSBURG, Va- The 30th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to in-state rival No. 15 UVA on Sunday in Blacksburg by a score of 6-1 in their last home match of the season. The Hokies are now 14-7 overall and 7-5 in the ACC with two regular season matches left to go.

Virginia (12-9, 7-5 ACC) claimed the first match of the afternoon in doubles play as the 20th-ranked duo of Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelley topped the Hokies’ Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford on court 1. Raluca Mita and Caroline Daxhelet evened things up with a 6-4 win over Stephanie Nauta and Cassie Mercer out of the 2 spot to set up a point-deciding contest on court 3. There, Erica Susi and Julia Elbaba outlasted Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar 6-3 to give the Cavaliers the 1-0 advantage.

Mita recorded Tech’s only point of the afternoon with a quick take down of Susi on court 5, winning 6-0, 6-3 to even the score at 1. Over on court 1, No. 3 Collins was too much for No. 49 Fusinato, winning 6-0, 6-4 to make it 2-1 in favor of the Cavaliers. No. 93 Nauta and No. 125 Daxhelet were locked in a battle on court 3 before Nauta pulled out a third set victory (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) for Virginia’s third point. Shortly after, Williford suffered a similar fate on court 4, losing 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to Kelley to clinch the victory for the Hoos.

Play continued with another pair of tight three-set affairs, both of which ended in favor of Virginia. Cerezo-Codina fell to No. 17 Elbaba 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on court 2 while Mercer defeated Katherine Butler on court 6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
