BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 48th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to No. 20 Clemson today in ACC opener for both teams. Francesca Fusinato provided a monumental victory for the Hokies’ program by defeating the No. 1-ranked player in the country for the first time in team history.

Doubles play began on a high note for Tech (2-3, 0-1 ACC) as Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford stormed out to a quick 6-0 victory on court 2 over Clemson’s Ally Miller-Krasilnikov and Daniela Ruiz. Clemson, however, countered with a pair of 6-4 wins on courts 1 and 3 to claim the doubles point for the Tigers.

Clemson went up 2-0 after Ilinca Stoica withdrew due to an illness on court 2. No. 108 Caroline Daxhelet got the Hokies on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Trsiten Dewar on court 4 to make it 2-1 in favor of the Tigers. Clemson then jumped out to a 3-1 lead after Sansitha Nandakumar was beaten by Jenny Moinard on court 5, 6-3, 6-4.

Francesca Fusinato provided a historic win for the Hokies with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the nation’s No. 1 player in Clemson’s Joana Eidukonyte. Fusinato is no stranger to beating highly-ranked opponents. Last season, she knocked off No. 6 Stephanie Wagner of Miami to clinch a huge 4-3 victory over the then-No. 16 Hurricanes in Blacksburg. Eidukonyte is ranked No. 851 in the entire world by the ITF and has an ITF Tournament Championship under her belt already. Fusinato’s win marks the first ever win against a No. 1 ranked opponent in the program’s history.

Cerezo-Codina followed Fusinato with a 4-6, 6-0. 6-2 win over No. 59 Fernanda Navarro to knot the match at 3, leaving Katherine Butler battling Ally Miller-Krasilnikov on court 6 to decide the match. Butler took Miller-Krasilnikov to three sets, but ultimately fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, giving the Tigers the 4-3 win.

Tech will return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Richmond and UMBC in Blacksburg at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
