LUBBOCK, Texas – The 30th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to No. 58 Illinois in a close one on Saturday before dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 60 Oregon the next day at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Lubbock, Texas.

The Hokies put up a fight against the Illini but eventually lost 4-3 in a tightly contested affair. Caroline Daxhelet picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ines Vias on court 4 to put the Hokies’ first point on the board. Ilinca Stoica defeated Illinois’ Alexis Casati in the 1 spot by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 before Elena Cerezo-Codina got her first of two wins on the weekend with a 7-6 (9), 2-6, 6-2 victory over Jericka Boone on court 3. With the score tied at 3 apiece, Francesca Fusinato’s deciding match against Louise Kwong went down to the wire, with Kwong ultimately prevailing in three sets, 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 to give the Illini the 4-3 win.

Cerezo-Codina also took down Shweta Sangwan of Oregon in two sets, 7-5, 6-2 to give Tech its only points of the match. The upsets move the Hokies’ record to 2-2 on the young season after they swept a doubleheader at home last weekend.

Tech returns home to the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center this Thursday, January 28^th for the first ACC match of the season against Clemson at 3 p.m. The Hokies look to open up conference play on a high note and avenge a 5-2 loss given to them by the Tigers on the road last season.
