BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sunday proved to be the most difficult afternoon of the tournament so far for the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team during the ITA Atlantic Regional. Ilinca Stoica kept things going for the Hokies, though, and enjoyed perfection in both singles and doubles play.
Stoica’s two victories in singles play land her in Monday’s quarterfinals where she’ll meet Virginia’s Skylar Morton. Her victories came over Towson’s Lucy Williams (6-2, 6-1) and Maryland’s Olga Bredikhina (6-0, 6-1).
The other Hokies that took the court in singles play on Sunday did not fare as well as Stoica. Sansitha Nandakumar dropped a tough match in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) to the No. 3 seed, Maci Epstein of Virginia. Elena Cerezo-Codina also lost in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 7-5) to Richmond’s Anna Abadias, while Raluca Mita fell to Marshall’s Derya Turhan 7-6 (4), 6-0.
Stoica teamed up with Mita to earn Tech’s only doubles victory of the day, defeating Kai Broomfield and Derya Turhan of Marshall by a score of 8-7 (5). Both duos of Nandakumar/Katherine Butler and Kelly Williford/Francesca Fusinato were on the wrong end of that same score, however, dropping matches to Pittsburgh and Temple, respectively.
Stoica/Mita will go up against George Washington’s Tedora Radosavljevic and Grace Egger in Monday’s quarterfinals.
Action resumes in the ITA Atlantic Regional beginning with doubles play at 10 a.m. on Monday with singles quarters to follow. All matches will be played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. As always, live stats will be available at www.hokiesports.com/wtennis/brackets/.
