
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Day two of the 2014 UST/ITA Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg brought more success for the Hokies, as multiple players in both singles and doubles play advanced to the next rounds. Tech went a perfect 3-for-3 in its doubles matches to start the day and earn berths in Sunday’s quarterfinals.
Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford took down Radford’s Meg Napolitano and Grace Sarver, 8-2, while Katherine Butler and Sansitha Nandakumar defeated Olivia Gaudreault and Alexandra Stanova of Maryland, 8-5. Rounding out the doubles action for the day were Raluca Mita and Illinca Stoica, who took care of Pittsburgh’s Callie Frey and Amanda Wickman by a score of 8-5.
Singles play brought along even more winning for the Hokies. Elena Cerezo-Codina kept things rolling for Tech as she kicked singles action off with a win over Kristina Hovsepyan of Maryland (6-1, 6-4). Mita topped Marshall’s Derya Turhan (6-3, 6-3) and Nandakumar took down Alex Huie of James Madison (6-3, 6-4). No. 2 seed, Stoica, ended the day for the Hokies with a victory over Old Dominion’s Ivana Vukovic (6-2, 6-1). These four will advance to play in Sunday’s round of 16.
Also taking the court for the Hokies in singles play were Williford and Butler, who dropped tough matches to opponents from VCU and Old Dominion, respectively.
Sunday will mark the third day of competition in the tournament, with doubles quarterfinals slated to get things started at 9 a.m. Fusinato and Williford will meet Temple’s Dina Karina and Monet Willis; Butler and Nandakumar will face Pittsburgh’s Audrey Ann Blakely and Lolade Ogungbesan and finally, Mita and Stoica will go up against Marshall’s Kai Broomfield and Derya Turhan.
Singles play will follow the doubles matches beginning around 10:30 a.m., with Mita taking on Turhan, Cerezo-Codina facing Richmond’s Anna Abadias, Stoica playing against Lucy Williams from Towson, and Nandakumar taking on No. 3 seed Maci Epstein from Virginia.
