
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 2014 Hokie Fall Invitational continued on Saturday with a round of doubles play followed by two rounds of singles play at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Sansitha Nandakumar, Elena Cerezo-Codina, Raluca Mita and Katherine Butler all won two singles matches apiece to earn spots in Sunday’s championship round.
Nandakumar defeated Katia Blik of Penn State (6-4, 6-4) and Olga Barscheheuskaya of VCU (7-5, 6-1), while Cerezo-Codina topped Dasha Sapogova of Penn State (6-3, 6-7, 6-2) and VCU’s Salome Kvitalishi (6-2, 6-1) to earn their spots. Butler beat Wofford’s Samantha Russell and Alex Tachovsky of Morehead State 6-3, 7-6 (2) and 6-1, 6-1, respectively. Mita took down Marie Loiuse Decamps of George Washington (7-6 (14), 6-4) as well as Taylor Shukow of Penn State (7-6 (4), 7-5). Butler and Mita are both in Flight C and will play each other in the championship match.
The Hokies enjoyed success in doubles play as well on Saturday with two teams advancing to championship matches. The duo of Mita/Illinca Stoica will face Blik/Sapogova of Penn State in Flight A, while Cerezo-Codina/Nandkumar will go up against Emily Groeneveld/Valerie Thong of Liberty in Flight B on Sunday.
Sunday marks the third and final day of competition at the Hokie Fall Invitational, with championship and consolation rounds in both singles and doubles play set to get underway at 9 a.m.
