
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team opened up its fall season in Wilmington, North Carolina over the weekend at the UNC Wilmington Beach Bash. The teams battled inclement weather all weekend, but were able to get all of the matches in.
The Hokies opened with singles play against Georgia on Friday and it ended up being the only action on the courts that day due to weather. Tech started things off Saturday morning with doubles play against UNC Wilmington. Kelly Williford and Elena Cerezo-Codina picked up the only Hokie win as they defeated Annika Sillanpaa/ Christine Kharkevitch 8-6 on Court 1.
The pair continued with their winning ways as they claimed another victory later in the day over East Carolina’s Nicole LaDuca/ Michelle Castro, 8-4. Katherine Butler and Sansitha Nandakumar picked up Tech’s third win of the day when they topped East Carolina’s Dana Gray/ Maria Storozheva, 8-4.
The Hokies returned to singles play on Sunday morning, taking on UNC Wilmington. Cerezo-Codina defeated Alyssa Ritchie 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot, and Butler knocked off Kharkevitch, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 on Court 3. Nandakumar added one more for the Hokies when she topped Alix Theodossiou 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.
In the final match of the day Cerezo-Codina and Nandakumar picked up two final wins for Tech against East Carolina. Cerezo-Codina earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot against Katie Hoch, and Nandakumar defeated Betsy Zurawel on Court 3 by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
The Hokies will have some time off before competing again as a team. Francesca Fusinato and Ilinca Stoica will head to California to compete in the All-American Championships beginning on Sat. Sept. 27, and the team will be back in action Friday, Oct. 3, hosting the Hokie Invite.
