No. 58 Hokies fall to No. 3 Cavaliers

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The No. 58 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Virginia (13-4, 7-1 ACC) tallied the first point of the day with the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles wins. Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi defeated the Hokie pair of Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita 8-0 at No. 2. Danielle Collins and Maci Epstein clinched the point for the Cavaliers with an 8-4 win over Tech’s Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar at No. 3.

The Cavaliers topped the Hokies (10-8, 3-6 ACC) on courts three, four and six to clinch the team victory after winning the doubles point. Nauta, ranked No. 45, took a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Mita in the No. 3 slot, and Xi quickly followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ivanovic at No. 6. Virginia secured the team win with 50th-ranked Rachel Pierson’s 6-1, 6-2 win over Nandakumar at No. 4.

With the match decided, Ilinca Stoica retired at No. 1, and third-ranked Julia Elbaba was credited with the 6-3, 4-1 ret. victory. Maci Epstein added Virginia’s sixth point as she topped Kahoun 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5. Virginia rounded out the day with Collins take the No. 2 match 7-6 (3), 6-1 over Kelly Williford.

The Hokies return to action on Thurs., April 3 as they welcome Coastal Carolina to the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center for a 3 p.m. match.
