RALEIGH, N.C. — The No. 59 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team (10-7, 3-5 ACC) defeated the No. 57 N.C. State Wolfpack (7-6, 1-5 ACC) 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
N.C. State was on the board first as they took the doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophie Nelson and Joelle Kissell won 8-6 over Raluca Mita and Carol Kahoun at No. 2 before Liza Fieldsend and Rachael James-Baker topped Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar 8-6 at No. 3.
The Hokies won the No. 1 doubles match as Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford tallied an 8-2 win over Elisha Hande and Nicole Martinez.
Tech was quick to bounce back, though, and Williford got things started for the Hokies. She took down Martinez 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot. Her win was quickly followed by another Hokie point. Mita defeated Fieldsend 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 to give Tech the 2-1 lead.
Francesca Fusinato, ranked No. 75, continued the Hokie effort with as she topped James-Baker 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.
Nandakumar clinched the victory for Tech when she defeated Natalia Janowicz 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5.
With the match decided, the Hokies and Wolfpack split the remaining two matches. Kahoun tallied the Hokies’ fifth point with a comeback 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4) win over Hande at No. 6. Kissell won the No. 1 match 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 over Stoica, ranked No. 66.
The Hokies return to the court on Saturday, March 29 to take on in-state rival Virginia at noon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg.
