WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The No. 59 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team (9-7, 2-5 ACC) dropped a road, ACC match 6-1 against No. 75 Wake Forest (10-6, 2-5 ACC) on Saturday afternoon.

The Demon Deacons started the day by taking the doubles point. Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner took the No. 1 doubles match 8-5 over Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford. Kimmy Guerin and Karen Forman paired up to clinch the doubles point with their 8-5 win over Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar.

Stoica, ranked No. 66, tallied a point for the Hokies when Andrea Retolaza retired with the score at 6-0, 1-0 at No. 1

Wake Forest tallied wins in the rest of the singles matches for the victory. Luisa Fernandez topped Williford 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, and Zhang took a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Carol Kahoun at No. 6.

The Demon Deacons clinched the match with Gardiner’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Nandakumar at No. 5.

Guerin won 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (2) over Francesca Fusinato at No. 1, and Samantha Asch topped Raluca Mita 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 to round out the day.

The Hokies return to action tomorrow as they take on N.C. State at 1 p.m. in Raleigh.
