BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis tem fell to No. 1 Duke, 5-2, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Ilinca Stoica returned to the No. 1 spot and knocked off the No. 2 player in the country, Beatrice Capra in three sets.
Stoica picked up one of Tech’s two singles wins with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) victory over Capra. Freshman Sansitha Nandakumar added another point for the Hokies when she defeated Annie Mullholland 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 5 spot. Sophomore Kelly Williford took No. 44 Hanna Mar to three sets after dropping the first and bouncing back in the second, but she was unable to close on the upset.
Tech will return to action on Sunday, March 9 as it hosts No. 12 North Carolina at 1 p.m.
