COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The No. 48 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated Maryland 5-2 on Sunday to improve to 9-4 and 2-2 in the ACC.

The Terps kicked the day off with a win of the doubles point. Maryland tallied wins with Welma Luus and Kristina Hovsepyan’s defeat of Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita 8-7 (4) at No. 1 and Nataliya and Olga Bredikhina’s win over Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar 8-5 at No. 3. Tech’s lone doubles win came at No. 2 as Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford defeated Alexandra Stanova and Olivia Gaudereault 8-2.

Maryland’s only other point on the day came from the No. 5 singles match as Nataliya Bredikhina topped Isel Martinez-Marcos 6-4, 6-4.

The Hokies five singles victories ensured the team victory. Fusinato, ranked No. 103, tallied a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stanova in the No. 1 slot. Stoica added a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hovespyan at No. 2, while Williford recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Luus at No. 3.

Tech’s other two points came from Raluca Mita’s 6-1, 6-1 win over Olga Bredikhina at No. 5 and Nandakumar’s 7-5, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 spot over Olga Gaistruck.

Tech returns to the court on Saturday as they take on Duke at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center at noon.
