SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team, ranked No. 48, fell to Syracuse 5-2 on Friday afternoon.

The Orange took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, despite the Hokies winning the first doubles match at No. 2. Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford topped Breanna Bachini and Amanda Rodgers 8-3 in the No. 2 slot.

Syracuse came back, and Rhiann Newborn and Komal Safdar defeated Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar 8-6 at No. 3. The doubles point went to the Orange when Maddie Kobelt and Valeria Salazar took down Tech’s No. 1 doubles team of Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita 8-7.

The Orange extended their lead to 2-0 when Kobelt won the No. 1 singles match over Fusinato, ranked No. 103, 6-4, 6-3.

Mita got Tech on the board with her 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Bachini at No. 5. Isel Martinez-Marcos evened the score at two when she tallied a victory over Salazar 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4.

Syracuse again rebounded to take the next three matches and seal the win. Rodgers topped Stoica 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2, and Newborn took the win over Williford 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 at No. 3. Komal Safdar rounded out the day as she defeated Nandakumar 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6

The Hokies return to the court on Sunday as they travel to Maryland to take on the Terps at Noon.
