BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 48 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will hit the road this weekend to continue conference play. Tech will travel to Syracuse for a match Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., and return to the court Sunday at Maryland for a noon match. The Hokies enter the weekend at 8-3 on the year and 1-1 in league play.
Tech began ACC play at home last weekend and split the two matches while also topping Radford, 5-0, Sunday night. The Hokies began the weekend with a 6-1 win over Pittsburgh, but fell in the early Sunday match 6-1 to No. 11 Clemson. Sophomore Ilinca Stoica was the lone Hokies to pick up a singles victory against the Tigers, topping No. 90 Beatrice Gumulya 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot. Despite snapping a seven-match win streak over the weekend that has included victories over two ranked teams, Tech has only fallen to teams ranked 28th or better.
Syracuse will host the Hokies in their first home match of the 2014 season. The Orange are 0-7 on the year and are coming off a pair of losses in North Carolina after kicking off league play last weekend. Syracuse fell at No. 46 NC State 4-3 before suffering a 6-1 loss at No. 1 Duke.
Maryland will travel to Pittsburgh Friday, before returning home to take on the Hokies Sunday. Heading into the weekend, the Terps are 4-3 on the year. After winning their first four matches of the season, they are in the midst of a three-match skid. Maryland is coming off a difficult weekend in Florida, where it was swept by No. 17 Miami and No. 30 Florida State.
