No. 47 Hokies fall to No. 11 Clemson

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team, ranked No. 47, fell to the No. 11 Clemson Tigers on Sunday afternoon 6-1 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Clemson tallied the first point of the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The 55th-ranked duo of Yana Koroleva and Beatrice Gumulya took the No. 1 win over Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita 8-1. The Tigers secured the point as Yuilynn Miao and Jessy Rompies topped Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar 8-1 at No. 3.

The Tigers added to their lead with the first singles win of the day. Rompies tallied Clemson’s second point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nandakumar at No. 6. Miao pulled the Tigers to within one point of the win as she defeated Mita 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.

Clemson clinched the team victory as 54th-ranked Romy Kölzer topped Kelly Williford 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot.

The remaining Hokies all put up strong fights against Clemson’s ranked players. Fusinato, ranked No. 90, dropped the first set at No. 1 despite having the opportunity to clinch the set twice at 5-4. She fell to 40th-ranked Koroleva 7-5, 6-3. Isel Martinez-Marcos took her first set 6-4 but fell in the second 2-6 and dropped the match tiebreak 10-2 to give 85th-ranked Tristen Dewar the win at No. 4.

Ilinca Stoica put the Hokies on the scoreboard with a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 win over 90th-ranked Gumulya at No. 2.

The Hokies return to action Sunday evening in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center as they take on Radford at 6 p.m.
